The Power of Practice... 

We practice Iyengar Yoga. It is a tradition that emphasizes correct alignment and unwavering attention when practicing yoga, making it the most refined methodology of modern yoga practiced today. It's practice transforms the individual from within, fostering firmness and flexibility, mental poise and a new sense of well-being. Achieving meditation-in-action, the practitioner learns to live fully in the present moment. 

Located in Saint Paul's West Side neighborhood, minutes from downtown, West Side Yoga is your place for learning the discipline of yoga from trained instructors with decades of experience. In addition to yoga asana classes we offer group practice, pranayama (breath control), workshops and social events. Our progressive course of classes will enable you to develop over time from being a raw beginner to a mature practitioner of yoga. We are dedicated to helping each and every student discover a practice that that develops physical health, self-knowledge and equinimity.  


  Teachers

Michael Moore

Michael began learning Iyengar Yoga in 1994 and studies regularly with the regions top teachers. He is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor (Intermediate Junior 1). In class, Michael focuses on the fundamentals that underpin an effective yoga practice. True to the Iyengar method, he encourages proper alignment, sequencing, and keen attention from his students. His teaching style blends firmness and precision with warmth and levity.  

Joy Laine

Joy has been certified as an Iyengar Yoga teacher since 1977. She currently holds an Intermediate Junior I certification and continues to study with senior teachers Kristin Chirhart and Chris Saudek. She began her study of yoga in England with Sylva Mehta, co-author of Yoga: The Iyengar Way and she has travelled to India several times to study directly with B.K.S. Iyengar.  In addition to her yoga teaching, Joy teaches philosophy at Macalester College where she has been a member of the philosophy department for over twenty five years. In her classes, she aspires to teach the precision of the Iyengar method infused with the philosophical teachings of the classical yoga tradition. She believes that the benefits of yoga should be available to everyone regardless of age or physical fitness.
